| Canned pumps are used when materials are
hazardous and the risk of a leak is not acceptable. This is accomplished by
enclosing the unit in a "can" that does not incorporate any seals that can
fail. Canned pumps are available in two varieties. The first has a separate
motor which drives the pump which is completely sealless, magnetic drives
act as a link between the shaft and impeller. The second type of canned pump
consists of a motor and pump in an enclosure with just the electrical
connections for the motor passing through the "can". Because there are no
moving parts in an electrical connection there is no possibility of a leak.
Canned pump pose a problem for vibration transducer mounting.
Normally, it is advised that a transducer be mounted on each bearing
housing. Since there is not access to the bearings do to the design,
transducers must be mounted to the external case. While this relates to less
than perfect vibration transduction, it is acceptable for monitoring
purposes.
