Single Cylinder Reciprocating Compressor

Chuck Bruton of SKF Reliability Systems out of Lansdale PA specified and sold a two channel CMCP500 Series transmitter based monitoring system to Gas and Air Systems Inc. of Hellertown PA for a Model P164M12CH Howden BC Compressor Single Cylinder Reciprocating Compressor that includes Frame Vibration and Rod Drop. STI's (STI Vibration Monitoring Inc.) Mike Howard closely supported SKF and the customer during installation of the monitoring equipment at their facility. The Ethylene rich gas mixture being compressed required a Hazardous Area Class 1, Division 2 system.

Frame Vibration:

Frame Vibration was completed using a CMCP793 Accelerometer connected to a CMCP530 Transmitter that provided sensor power, OK Circuit and a 4-20 mA Output for connection the customers PLC/DCS System. Frame Vibration protects the Frame or Crankcase from excessive vibration that may be caused mechanically or operationally. STI usually recommends two channels of Frame Vibration be used if connected to automatic shutdown to prevent false trips.



Rod Drop:

Rod Drop was also provided for the single cylinder in the Distance Piece or the area between the Crosshead and Cylinder. Rod Drop was measure using a CMSS 68 Proximity System with 80 mils range mounted using a CMCP801 Relative Probe Holder and connected to a CMCP545 Position Transmitter. Rod Drop is the measurement of "drop" of the Piston Rod as Wear Rings wear on the Piston itself in a "down" direction by gravity loading. Measuring Rod Drop prevents the metal Piston from damaging the Cylinder Liner. Wear Rings mounted much like compression rings on the Piston are designed to wear over time and prevent metal to metal damage.

Junction Box and Power Supplies:

A Stainless Steel Junction Box was mounted on the Machine Frame and includes the two transmitters and power supplies and Driver/Proximitor. In this case two power supplies were used as both +24 VDC and -24 VDC were required. -24 VDC for the CMSS 68 Proximity System. The 4-20 mA outputs were for future connection to the customers PLC/DCS System for display and alarming.
